TNCA annual day

Abhinav Mukund is State cricketer of the year

Left-handed opener Abhinav Mukund was adjudged Cricketer of the Year — he won the Bishnuram Medhi Trophy — during the annual day function of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Wednesday.

In other major awards, paceman J. Kaushik won the V. Jagannathan Trophy for the ‘best bowler’ in the Ranji Trophy for season 2011-2012. And wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik took the Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy Endowment for Consistent Performance in Ranji Trophy.

Vijay Shankar was named the Collegiate Cricketer of the Year — he received the Baliah Memorial Trophy. Off-spinning all-rounder B. Aparajith and left-arm spinner R. Aushik Srinivas were named the best ‘school cricketer’ and the best ‘districts cricketer’ respectively.

Vijay CC was handed the Raja of Palayampatti Shield for supremacy in TNCA first division league.Speaking on the occasion, BCCI President and TNCA head N. Srinivasan congratulated the State Ranji Trophy team for making the final of the competition last season.

He expressed hope that the side would cross the finishing line this year.
Mr. Srinivasan dwelt on the fantastic response of the crowd at Chepauk for the last two games of IPL-V, including the final, where the entire stadium was made available to the public.
He said the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium was among the finest in the game and added IPL-V was a tremendous success.

The BCCI chief revealed it would be decided soon in Kuala Lumpur whether the Champions League would be held in India or in South Africa.
Turning to chief guest, Jennifer McIntyre, Consul General, US Consulate, Chennai, Mr. Srinivasan hoped cricket would grow in its popularity in the US.

He said the IPL franchises would be travelling to the United Games to take part in friendly contests in the years to come.
Ms. McIntyre confessed she was a fan of the Chennai Super Kings. She added sport could break barriers and build bridges.

The Consul General said cricket already had a promising cultural presence in the US.
Importantly, TNCA secretary K.S. Viswanathan said Chennai would host a Test between India and Australia early next year. Dr. G. Natarajan, joint secretary, TNCA, proposed a vote of thanks.
